The Friends of the Lawrence County Public Library met on May 18th at the library. The meeting was conducted by President Jean Grimsley. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read by Joan Hester. Judy Bottoms gave a detailed treasurer’s report.

Jean and Teresa gave a report on their attendance at the annual meeting of the Friends of Tennessee Libraries which was held on May 11th at the Williamson County Library. Maxine Holloway was not able to be at our meeting, so she had sent a written report which was read to the group. All three agreed that it was a very worthwhile trip. They came away with new ideas-both for our own group’s dynamics as well as ideas for programs to offer to our community.

There was some discussion about the dates for the next Friends book sale. The sale is tentatively set for September. Exact dates will be announced later. The group also talked about whether it would be necessary to raise annual dues in 2008 due to the increase in postage rates.

Library Director Teresa Newton updated the group about recent activities at the library. She announced that the cost of the automatic door operators would be paid out of the county’s building maintenance budget, so the proceeds from our recent book sale could be used for other things. She asked that $1000 of the money be used to purchase new books for the library. The library’s book budget for this fiscal year has been used and the library would not be able to purchase any new books in May or June without help from the Friends. She also asked that the group consider the purchase of a color printer for use in promotional flyers, signs, etc. After discussion, the group voted to allocate the money for book purchases and gave Teresa a budget with which to shop for a printer.

The meeting was adjourned with a reminder that our next meeting will be held on Friday, July 13th.
