If it’s June, then there must be a summer reading program at the library! This year’s theme is “Rompin’, Stompin’, Reading Roundup. Children in grades K-6 are encouraged to take part in our reading club. Registration day in Lawrenceburg is scheduled for June 12th. Just stop in during business hours (9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.) to register your child, pick up a reading log, and get all the details about the club. Children who use the Loretto Branch Library may register on Wednesday, June 13th. The library hours in Loretto that day are noon until 6:00 p.m. Children are asked to read books that fit their grade or reading level and keep a list of those books for us. Bring your reading log into the library each week to have a staff person sign off on it and give you an incentive prize. On June 28th, staff members from the Blue Grass Regional Library will have a special storytime program for all children who are participating. An end-of-the-summer party will be held in July. Let’s see just how many good books the kids can rustle up while they are out of school.

On June 7th, Anita Marston conducted a special story program for children. This program was sponsored by the Flower Lovers Circle garden club and the books which were read all talked about-you guessed it-gardening. Thanks, Anita.

We need your help!

  • Please do not make your own repairs to library books. We appreciate the thought that you want to fix tears and loose pages, but we use special types of glue and tape to repair our books. Some books were returned recently that had been repaired almost beyond repair. Just tell us about any problems that you encounter with our books and we’ll do our best to repair them. Thanks!

  • If your dog, cat, child chews up or badly damages a book, we will bill you for the replacement cost of the book. If you spill coffee, or coke or jelly on our books, we will have to ask you to pay for those items too. We are having a rash of damaged and destroyed items returned to us and our budget does not include funds to replace items damaged while you have them checked out. Also, please note that we cannot accept replacement books for anything that you lose or damage UNLESS it is a new copy of the same book. Someone who had lost a book recently brought us a replacement copy that she had purchased at a used book store. Unfortunately, the book had been discarded from another library and was stamped throughout the book with that library’s name and address. We couldn’t add it to our collection in that condition.

  • Hot summer days and audio books left in hot cars don’t mix! If you must leave books on tape or CD or movies or DVDs in your car, PLEASE put them out of the direct sun. The temperature in a car on hot summer days will warp the cassettes, CDs, and the cases they are in. As stated above, if the items are damaged while you have them checked out, we will bill you for the replacement costs. Since audiobooks are rather expensive, it would be in your own best interest to treat them carefully while you are using them.

The Fourth Thursday Book Discussion Club

The book discussion group will meet on Friday, June 29th, at noon to talk about Summer at Willow Lake by Susan Wiggs.  Everyone who has read the book is welcome to join us.  Our group meets for about an hour so that people may come on their lunch breaks.  I would also like to have suggestions from you for upcoming discussions.  Let me know what you would like to read.

       This & That...

  • We currently have 1506 Lawrence County preschoolers who are registered for the Imagination Library program. If your child who is under the age of 5 is not yet enrolled, we encourage you to fill out the very simple registration form. All children under 5 who live in Lawrence County are eligible. Parents are also reminded to notify the library if your mailing address changes. Books cannot be forwarded to a new address.

  • R.E.A.D.S. use is still growing. Lawrence County library patrons continue to have some of the highest numbers in the Blue Grass region. This program allows you to download electronic books to your home computer or audiobooks to your MP3 player. If you aren’t familiar with R.E.A.D.S., ask a library staff member for a brochure that has all of the details.

  • Don’t forget to use the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) when you are working on those school papers or when you want to find information for any purpose.  Hundreds of magazines and journals may be accessed online. Other informative databases are also available. Just go to http://access.gale.com/cgi-bin/tel2/county.pl?Lawrence, click on Lawrence County Public Library’s “access your databases” and go.
